FAQ RideConnect Program Closes

We have received many questions regarding RideConnect of Family Services. Family Services officially closed that program on December 31, 2025 and will no longer provide the ride service.

TRA is stepping up to help support the older adults who relied on RideConnect for transportation. Mindful of its commitments to our existing riders and volunteers, TRA is carefully transitioning to help preserve access to essential non-emergency medical transportation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What areas does TRA serve? TRA provides transportation for non-emergency medical appointments within Westchester County, Putnam County, and Southwest Fairfield County. Rides are provided Monday through Friday, from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Do you drive just to medical appointments? Yes, our drivers will take you to appointments with a doctor, dentist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, behavioral therapist, speech and language pathologist, and vaccination sites. We currently are unable to offer rides to massage therapies, exercise classes, or dialysis appointments. We will refer you to other ride providers if we can’t drive you.

What if I need a ride outside these limits? Our coordinators can help connect you with other transportation services for trips beyond what TRA can provide. We strongly recommend riders register with Paratransit, (914) 995-7272, in case TRA cannot accommodate your ride request. Please call for more information on resources in your area.

Do you screen drivers? Yes. We check references and conduct motor vehicle and criminal background screenings through a national firm that works with our insurance company.

I have signed a waiver. Now what? The TRA Call Center will let you know when we have received your signed waiver and your application is approved to begin scheduling. Please do not use the Contact Us form to make or change an appointment. All rides must be scheduled by phone through our Call Center at (914) 764-3533. The Call Center is open Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm.

Please request your rides with as much notice as possible. Currently we schedule a maximum of two round trips to medical appointments per client per week.  Any new requests or changes to existing requests within 3 business days may not be considered. Please know that there is a limit to the number of rides we can provide per day. Days may be fully booked several weeks in advance. Don’t delay!

May I have 2 rides in a day? Only under exceptional circumstances

How much does a ride cost? There is no fee to register for rides or to receive rides. While we don’t charge for service, we do accept donations, which we use to recognize and reward our volunteers, who pay for their own gas and auto insurance. Donations also help us meet local match requirements for government grants.

I use a rolling walker. May I use your service? If you are able to fold your walker and put it into the car, you may bring your walker with you. You may also bring a caregiver with you to fold your walker and place it into the vehicle. But please be sure that your caregiver or aide signs a waiver of liability form before your trip!

Do you transport people in wheelchairs?
Yes, we do have vehicles that are equipped to accommodate wheelchairs. Please book your trip with as much advance notice as possible to ensure one of these vehicles is available. If you are able to self-transfer in and out of a passenger vehicle, there may be more drivers available for your trip. We recommend that a caregiver accompany you to assist with transferring and stowing the wheelchair.

Please note that while our drivers are happy to offer limited, non-medical assistance when feasible (such as providing an arm for balance or accompanying a client into a building), we cannot guarantee that all drivers are able to provide extensive physical assistance. If you anticipate needing a higher level of assistance for your appointments, we kindly ask that you arrange for a caregiver or family member to accompany you or coordinate in advance with your medical provider to have staff meet you at the vehicle with a wheelchair or other appropriate support.

May my mother bring her home health aide with her? Yes. Our drivers will be happy for your mother’s aide to accompany her on the ride. However, the aide will also have to sign a waiver of liability ahead of time. Just call the office for details or to obtain a waiver form. 914-764-3533.
