AARP offers a Guide to Protecting Yourself from Fraud with some updates for the times we are living in. For example did you know it was safer to use a credit card than a debit card? Check the list and if you’d like more information click here for the full list.

Here’s the short list:
- Opt for electronic statements if you are concerned about mailbox theft
- Use a shredder to shred bills and financial statements
- Freeze your credit report
- Stop entering sweepstakes
- Stop giving out your Social Security number
- Use a credit card whenever possible, not a debit card
- Use mobile payments (for a detailed explanation on what is a moble payment click this mobile payment explanation on Wikipedia)
- Add you name to the Do Not Call Registry to help block unwanted calls. Call the FTC at 888-382-1222
- Be prepared and hang up on robocalls, don’t respond, just hang up
- Be wary of public wi-fi
- Be careful of sharing on social media, for example, don’t share your phone number, home address, anything related to your work, payment info, relationship status, health info, birthday or Social Security Number
- Don’t reveal your location. Posting photos in real time while you’re at a resturant (or vacation) reveals you aren’t at home
- Don’t fall prey to fear-based scams
- Don’t respond to scam-recovery pitch
