Ageism Awareness is celebrated every October. Have you ever experienced ageism? Older adults, often portrayed as frail and needy more often remain healthy, active and engaged. Many of TRA’s volunteer drivers fall into the 50+ category.
The New York State Office of the Aging wants to remind us that New York’s 4.6 million older adults bring enormous intellecual, social and economic capital to the plate. Older New Yorkers and baby boomers make up 65% of all household income generated in New York State.
Here’s a few quick facts:
• 935,000 individuals age 60+ contribute 495 million hours of community service at an economic value of $13.8 billion.
• Adults 50+ are responsible for approximately $1.8 trillion in federal, state and local taxes (2018), a figure that will quadruple by 2050
• New Yorkers 50+ are 36% of the population yet contribute 43% (or $719 billion) of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This is expected to reach $2.2 trillion by 2050.
