Enjoying Getting to Know Her Riders (LINK)

Volunteer driver Liz Lagatt is a retired obstetrician. In the course of her medical work, she estimates that she’s welcomed 8,000 babies into the world.

She grew up in New York City where she could always walk or take public transportation to a destination.  When Liz moved to Westchester County in 1985, right away she could see that in Westchester you are dependent on a car. As she’s gotten older and watched family members and friends age, Liz understands how devastating it can be for someone who can’t drive anymore. She would like to support people to stay in their homes as long as they possibly can.

Liz is very impressed by many of the people she drives, with their tremendous challenges and their tremendous motivation to stay independent as long as possible. Liz enjoys doing repeat rides, providing both the drop off and pick for her rider. She gets to know her rider and can familiarize herself with various medical services and locations.

LIz finds each rider is different and respects those differences.  She stated “Some of the people I drive are wonderful to talk to, but everybody’s different. Some people, they prefer to be silent. Other people, it can be a little challenging to talk to them. but they all have the need. I respect all of them for being willing to take care of themselves and get to the doctor, or the chiropractor, or the dentist, or the physical therapist. I would like to be their partner in helping them take care of themselves.
