The National Traffic Safety Administration offers 10 Safe Driving Tips for 2025. Safer driving will not only protect you but also your loved ones and other drivers on the road. The first tip might be the most obvious – but make sure you to it!

  • Buckle Up. Every trip, every time – it can save your life and reduce the risk of injuries from a crash.
  • Ensure Children are in the Right Seat – use it every time and know when to transition to a new seat or seat belt. Click for more information.
  • Drive Sober – always! Driving when impaired is dangerous, and a crime. Plan ahead and arrange for a ride if you think you will need one.
  • Pay Attention to the Road – distracted driving includes texting or talking on your phone, eating, drinking, adjusting the stereo – anything that takes your attention away from driving.
  • Obey Speed Limits – Speeding increases the risk for more severe injuries in a crash. When you are driving the speed limit but it’s bad weather, at night, or through a construction zone, slow down.
  • Never Drive Drowsy – Midnight to 6am and late afternoon are peak sleepiness periods, be alert for signs of drowsiness such as driving over road lines or rumble strips. Be aware if medications may affect your ability to drive safely.
  • Share the Road Responsibly – Be mindful that in addition to other motorists you also share the road with motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
  • Pay Attention to Flashing Lights – When you see flashing lights stopped on the highway, move over to leave an empty lane between you and the stopped vehicles. All 50 states have Move Over laws. Remember if a school bus has yellow lights flashing it is slowing down for a stop, red flashing lights means it is coming to a full stop.
  • Talk to teen drivers to remind them to follow these tips. You can be a good role model and stay involved with your teen’s driving habits.
  • Check for Recalls – at least twice a year. You can visit NHTSA.gov/Recalls and enter your license plate or VIN to check.
